Friday November 25 - Music at the Crossroads of Time and Place

On Friday November 25, Vancouver-based musical non-profit organization Müzewest Concerts will be hosting an unforgettable night of chamber music featuring Honens prize winner, Han Chen, as well as clarinetist Christopher Lee.

Han Chen is “impressively commanding and authoritative” (Gramophone) and has “a graceful touch”, “rhythmic precision” and “hypnotic charm” (New York Times). After winning the Gold Medal at the 2013 China International Piano Competition, Chen has released three solo albums under the Naxos Records (music by Liszt, Rubinstein, and Thomas Adès, respectively). In 2021, Chen launched Migration Music, a series of interviews and performances featuring immigrant composers. Participating composers include Reinaldo Moya, Jihyun Kim, Lei Liang, Vivian Fung, and Huang Ruo. Born in Taiwan, Chen now resides in New York. After graduating from The Juilliard School (with Prof. Yoheved Kaplinsky) and the New England Conservatory (with Prof. Wha Kyung Byun), he is now a doctoral candidate at The Graduate Center, CUNY under the guidance of Prof. Yoheved Kaplinsky and Prof. Ursula Oppens.

Christopher Lee completed his Master’s degree at Juilliard School where he received Bachelor’s degree on Irene Diamond Graduate Fellowship and Eve Lyndlemarch Scholarship. He has studied with renowned clarinetist Charles Neidich and Ayako Oshima at The Juilliard School. Christopher has won the first and grand prizes at many competitions such as Korean Clarinet Competition, Vancouver Burnaby Clef Society Competition, “VAM” Competition, Korean Young Artist Competition and more. He was invited to perform and received the certificate at the 5th Carl Nielsen International Clarinet Competition in Odense, Denmark that only opens every 4 years. Christopher had been appointed as a principal clarinet of National Youth Symphony Orchestra of Canada, Vancouver Youth Symphony Orchestra and “VAM” Symphony Orchestra while giving out concerts tour in 12 different cities in North America. Christopher is currently principal clarinet of Vancouver Island Symphony Orchestra and occasionally performs with Vancouver Symphony Orchestra and Victoria Symphony Orchestra.
